Chad Oatway has always been drawn to being active where he grew up loving the outdoors and playing multiple high school sports. Chad has been very interested in physical health and fitness all of his life and since graduating high school has been involved in many capacities of education, training, coaching, and teaching physical health. After high school, Chad attended college for two years while playing junior football. During that time, he found an interest in what aspects of education made up athletics and physical health. After college he attended the University of British Columbia (UBC) from 1998-2005, graduating with a Bachelor of Human Kinetics with a concentration in Psychology, Nutrition, & Family Studies as well as a Bachelor of Education. During that time, he played football for the UBC Thunderbirds for four seasons and in 2002-2004 had the opportunity to work with the UBC Varsity Men’s Basketball and Women’s Field Hockey teams as both a Strength and Conditioning Coach and Athletic Trainer. In addition, Chad worked at many sport and youth camps and became a certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist during University. This gave Chad the opportunity to work and train multiple high school, varsity, and professional athletes.
In 2005, Chad Oatway began his teaching and coaching career at New Westminster Secondary School (NWSS) where he had the opportunity to teach Strength & Conditioning, Physical & Health Education, Foods & Nutrition, Career & Health Education, and run a Sport Leadership Cohort. In addition, during his time at NWSS he was heavily involved coaching football and wrestling winning two provincial championships in each sport. Chad has been heavily involved in developing curriculum for the New Westminster School district around Physical & Health Education, male adolescent & kinesthetic learning, Sport, and Leadership to help meet goals within the district and province.
Currently, Chad is teaching at Fraser River Middle School (FRMS) in New Westminster where he is teaching Science, Math, Career Ed, and PHE. Chad is also working on the school Pro-D committee, coaching the FRMS football team, and helping coordinate the Ski and Board Club at FRMS. He has also continued his work from the high school in looking for ways to develop health and physical literacy in his students and the district. Chad is continuing to explore the 3E Health Model of teaching in his classroom building on the components of social, emotional, and physical health in his students. Chad is passionate in sharing and presenting on the 3E Health Model with teachers and parents from his learning and experiences in the classroom and personal life on how to develop healthier youth. Personally, Chad loves being active with his family in the great outdoors, coaching his children, and being involved in athletics and sport.
